At 17:47 UTC on 12 August 2026, totality swept across Snæfellsnes for 2 minutes and 7 seconds.
Iceland’s last total solar eclipse was in 1954. This year, while Reykjavík was clouded out completely, in Hellissandur the sky held. Many who were there called it the most powerful eclipse they have witnessed.
Home to just 400 people and set at the westernmost edge of Iceland with minimal light pollution, Hellissandur put guests within reach of glaciers, black sand beaches, lava fields and ice caves, all inside one geologically dense peninsula.
Icelandic and international artists brought local stories, landscapes and legends to life across the town in the Murals of Hellissandur, a living, community-driven canvas that guests could walk between programming blocks.
The site ran from the road down to the lava edge: Aurora and Polaris at the top, Sacred Fire and Afterglow through the middle, the Eclipse Stage at the far end, and the Ceremony Garden and Cosmic Connection held apart in their own quiet corner.
Everything was walkable. Guests moved between a laser set, a sound bath and a sacred fire in the time it takes to cross a field.
The Eclipse Seeker community came from all around the world to gather at the edge of the Earth. It was a group that included astronauts, scientists, artists, healers and many others exploring the borders of our shared reality.
Renowned entrepreneurs, scientists, activists, astronauts, artists and musicians made up the collective, with a cumulative reach in the hundreds of millions.
Above & Beyond took the Eclipse Stage on the Friday, and partway through the set the northern lights appeared over several thousand people dancing.
Seeing the aurora in August is rare, and it is something we will cherish forever.
From The New York Times to a live SETI Institute broadcast, and totality captured from the edge of space, the story reached far beyond the glacier.
Brands who did more than put a logo on a banner. They built platforms, poured water, dressed the crew and put roots back in the ground.

Part innovation residency, part pop-up village, The Portal ran as an analog space mission. Around fifty artists, scientists and builders lived together at The Freezer in Ríf and made the work that later appeared across the festival site.
Five days on the field were only part of it. Guests could take the music underground and into the ice, move through geothermal ritual and ceremony, and range out across the island, before and after totality.
Total solar eclipses normally arrive as isolated events. Three, in three successive summers, on three continents, is the anomaly, and Iceland opened it.

The wilderness proved the demand. The city removes the cap.
